Why a Health Community?
For my first blog I decided to start with my story….
I have had challenges with my weight my entire life. I have tried so many different programs I can’t even count them all. Some were successful, some were not, but it was always temporary. Recently, my weight started affecting my health. I knew I had to do something.. This time I realized it is about making a change… a lifestyle change. It is about staying committed to that change because healthy is a journey, not a destination. This time it is not about one thing. It is about the entire body: mind, body, and spirit. Most importantly, this journey is long and arduous and best done with a buddy and in community.
I made a conscientious decision to change my lifestyle on many fronts: eating cleanly which meant for me no flour, no processed sugar, no processed foods. I also wanted to change the way I thought about food. Food is not the most important thing in life.. there are so many more places to focus. I was now going to enjoy moving my body: dancing, walking, biking, yoga, and swimming. I was also going to develop several spiritual disciplines by reconnecting to the Divine, meditating/praying and instituting a mindset of gratitude.
Needless to say, this was transformational and life affirming.
One day I was sitting on the side of my bed and I realized I had been doing my dance party for months now. I wondered why I was sticking with this. So many times I made a plan to go to the gym, start walking every day, etc., etc. only to give it up. Why this? I realized I felt accountable to these women and it was in community and the community made me happy. That’s when the healthy community idea was born.
